Today, we’re excited to launch Time to Deliver – our brand new campaign telling the UK Government it’s time to deliver much-needed finance to nations that are bearing the brunt of the climate crisis. Will you join us?
Right now – even as they face new global emergencies – the most climate-vulnerable nations are being forced to divert money away from crucial public services, such as healthcare and schooling, to protect themselves against climate impacts. Temperature rises and more extreme weather events are destroying livelihoods, sweeping homes away, causing acute hunger – and it’s a crisis they didn’t cause.
This is a huge injustice that must be addressed and can’t be put on hold. Back in 2009, the higher-income countries most responsible for the climate crisis promised to pay $100 billion a year from 2020 to help lower-income countries respond. At the Glasgow climate talks (COP26) last year, the world was waiting for wealthy nations to make good on this commitment – and promise new finance. But they failed to fulfil their promises.
Countries suffering the worst effects have been clear in their calls for finance to meet climate targets and adjust to the catastrophic impacts of the crisis that is pushing millions of people into poverty. In the meantime, frontline communities are doing what they can to develop creative solutions, from solar-powered wells to sustainable farming. But this innovation needs investment, and it’s time to deliver what’s been promised.
The UK Government holds the COP presidency until November 2022, when it will hand the baton to Egypt at COP27. This gives the UK extra influence this year – and gives UK campaigners a unique opportunity to push for progress on this issue. We’re calling on the UK Government to urge other wealthy nations to deliver the promised climate finance and make sure it reaches communities in greatest need.
