Dear Peter,

At the start of the year, Sir David Attenborough described 2021 as ‘a crucial moment in our history’ in the fight against the climate crisis. We’ve also been calling this the biggest year yet for climate action. But why?

The climate crisis continues to grow in urgency each day. We’re still on course for catastrophic temperature rises that will put millions of lives at risk and push people further into poverty. We need governments, businesses and communities to ramp up their climate action dramatically – and this year, the UK has a special role to play.

The UK will host two major world summits that have the potential to be massive moments in the fight against climate change: the G7 in June and COP26 in November.

Don’t let the acronyms put you off! We’ve put together a handy explainer that unpacks what these events are, why they matter and how we can pray.

The G7, or ‘Group of Seven’ summit, is an annual gathering of leaders from some of the world’s most influential countries, where they discuss how they’ll tackle big global issues. This year’s G7 will be held in Cornwall from 11 to 13 June, focusing on building back better from coronavirus.

COP stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’, and it’s the United Nations’ annual summit on climate change. Governments of practically every country in the world come together to make plans for tackling the climate crisis. It will be held in Glasgow from 1 to 12 November 2021.

As we look ahead to these big moments and continue with the momentum from our Reboot campaign, we will have new ways that you can take action and pray. Every voice matters – so we’re praying that you’ll join us in raising our voices together for those living in poverty. Watch this space!

Every blessing,

Kiran Rai
