Craig’s letter of 18 March

Craig Bowman
Revd Craig Bowman

Dear Friends

This coming Sunday we hear Jesus talking of how a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, and by dying it can produce great fruit. As we continue our journey through Lent with our eyes fixed on Jesus and his journey towards the cross, we understand the symbolic nature of this saying. But we also hear from the prophet Jeremiah as he tells the people that God will put his law within them and write it on their hearts; he shall be their God and they will be his people.

Both images are of what happens hidden deep inside and I was reminded of a poem by an American minister that was shared with me a few years ago.

The Seed by Timothy Haut

Take the seed of my life, Lord,
and plant it deep in the rich darkness
of your love.
Let the hard husk
of my earthly shell
soften in the safe places of your presence,
and finally fall away.
Help my spirit to send our roots
that will anchor me
in the ground of your grace,
nourishing my growing heart
so that one day it may seek
the truest, brightest light,
and finally make a flower
more beautiful than anyone can imagine.
Take my seed, O Lord,
in your hands,
and begin your miracle

Synod Anniversary Service

A reminder that the Southern Synod is holding a Zoom service of thanksgiving this Sunday at 6.30pm to mark a year since we first went into lockdown on the 23rd of March 2020. All are invited to join the service, Thanksgiving will be offered for:

  • the lives of those who sadly died because of Covid-19.
  • the skill of the scientists who in less than nine months have produced vaccines to counteract the effect of Covid-19.
  • all those employed in the medical profession in its widest role.
  • teachers and all the key workers in trades and professions too numerous to mention.

The preacher will be the new Synod Moderator, Revd Bridget Banks, and after the service there will be breakout rooms to spend a little time sharing our experiences with each other.

The Zoom link details are as follows:

Click here to join the service.
or use the meeting ID: 815 9059 2411 (no password required; there will be a waiting room)

As we witness the signs of Spring all around us may our lives also reveal how God’s ways are growing within us.
