Newsletter 124   January 2021

Dear Friends

I hope this finds you well, and starting the new year with a sense of God’s presence. As we continue in lockdown, we remain alert to the justice issues that are increasingly prevalent across our communities. The year ahead will still require our attentiveness, compassion and call to justice. I pray that you will feel resourced by God’s grace and the strength we can find in our unity.

This month, we have a new podcast episode, updates on Reset The Debt and climate campaigning in the UK, and an exciting teaser ahead of next Friday’s implementationn of the TPNW.

May you remain in God’s love and care.

Every Blessing

Hannah & The JPIT team

Reset The Debt News

By the end of 2020, over 900 people had written to their MP about Reset The Debt. 425 MPs have been contacted, and the campaign has been featured in the national news. But we’re still calling on the Government to recognise and respond to the mounting Covid-debt crisis weighing heavily on low-income families.

Last week, both the Scottish and UK Government’s announced an extension to the evictions bans introduced in 2020. But hidden in the detail was bad news for families who fell behind on rent because of the pandemic in England and Wales, as lockdown rent arrears now count as grounds for eviction.

Read about the consequences here.

This week, it was reported that County Court Judgements (CCJs) have risen dramatically. This means that people who have fallen behind on a non-priority payment (such as a car or utility bill) can be chased for the debt through bailiff action. This rise in CCJs has occurred much earlier than we expected, and signals a surge in problem debt.

Read about what this means here.

What can you do?We’re developing the most effective next steps for the Reset The Debt campaign, so keep in touch with us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates. If you haven’t already written to your MP, why not take five minutes to do so now?

UK Climate Commitments: Where are we up to?

Towards the end of 2020, the UK Government made various announcements regarding their commitments to climate action, at a time when they should have been chairing a review of the Paris Agreement during the original COP26 dates. So, where are we up to with the UK’s commitments to climate action? Here are some of the headlines as we start 2021.
