New report: How is the UK church faring amid the crisis?

The UK church has stepped up, but we can go even further for our communities

Dear Peter

One of the reasons the Evangelical Alliance exists is to gather insight, experiences and stories from across the UK church and share this information so that your church community can be informed and equipped as we work together to make Jesus known.

This is why we were pleased to commission the Changing church report in partnership with Stewardship and Edio Research, asking questions about how the pandemic is impacting the activities of churches and faith-based organisations in the UK.

The results of the survey of almost 700 churches and 196 Christian organisations are both encouraging and exciting, with:

  • 59% of the churches surveyed reporting a marked increase in people interested in finding out more about the Christian faith;
  • 70% of church leaders saying they have seen a surge in number of people who would not normally go to church attending church services during the lockdown;
  • 88% of church leaders sharing that their churches are working tirelessly to meet the needs of vulnerable people in this challenging time; and
  • 72% of the 88% of churches working in collaboration with either local authorities, other churches or charities to serve those with the greatest needs.

Whilst you’ll also see in the report statistics that highlight some of the challenges both churches and charities are facing – challenges that we are to work together to surmount – the overarching message is that we have shown great agility, creativity, fortitude and faith as the church of God in this time.

Our church buildings may be shut, but we the church remain open and active. Let us continue to go above and beyond for our communities – there is always more that we can do. Please know that we remain committed to supporting you on this journey.

Every blessing,

Gavin Calver
