Tearfund: Take the plastic pledge

Hi, Peter

Take the pledge

Feeling a bit Rubbish?

We all know the feeling. The summer break is over, the schools are back and we’re heading towards autumn. (Can’t believe I just said that.) Normal life has resumed – or has it?

Over the summer, I had hundreds of conversations at festivals with people who were taking steps to reduce their plastic waste at home. That’s hundreds of households cutting down on plastic destined for landfill, incineration or shipping overseas. I was inspired to hear the stories of what people are already doing – from fairly easy swaps such as using a refillable water bottle or coffee cup, to making their own toothpaste and kitchen cleaners (apparently not as hard as it sounds). It made me think about what I can do next to reduce my waste and cause less damage to creation. Or, as the Bible says, how I can take my ‘everyday, ordinary life… and place it before God as an offering’ (Romans 12:1–2, The Message).

This week is Zero Waste Week, a global movement to help people reduce their rubbish. So if you’re having the post-summer blues, why not pledge to make your own single-use swap and do your bit to help tackle plastic pollution?

It’s easy to join in: just take our Plastic Pledge to give up one type of single-use plastic for 40 days. Whether that’s plastic bottles, coffee cups, food packaging or something else entirely, every swap is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.

Take the plastic pledge

And by the way, you’re definitely not rubbish!

Every blessing,

Clare Lyons, Tearfund Action
