Tearfund: Don't be rubbish

Hi, Peter

Join us

Today, we’re launching a rubbish campaign.

You heard us right. Our world has a rubbish problem – and it’s hitting people in poverty the hardest.

Call on companies to stop the rubbish.

Two billion people in the world’s poorest countries are living and working among piles of waste because their rubbish isn’t collected. That’s one in four people who are drinking polluted water, breathing toxic air and battling sickness. This causes up to 1 million deaths a year – and each day the waste mountains are growing.

Companies such as Coca-Cola, Nestlé, PepsiCo and Unilever are making things worse by selling billions of products in single-use plastic packaging, in countries where waste isn’t collected. They know that communities have no choice but to live among the rubbish or burn it – which also contributes to climate change.

But this rubbish situation can change, if we act together. We can call on companies to take responsibility for the plastic waste mountains their products are creating in poorer communities. And we can pledge to cut down on plastics ourselves, too. When we do, we’re showing that we love our neighbours and care for God’s creation.

Will you take 30 seconds to ask companies to stop being rubbish?

Thank you so much for your support. With your help, we can tackle this rubbish problem.

Every blessing,

Ruth Valerio,
Director of Global Advocacy and Influencing
