We have exciting news about our Light up the Darkness campaign!
As you know, we have been calling on the World Bank to invest more money into off-grid renewables so that people living in poverty can get access to electricity.
More than 9,000 of you so far have echoed that call and added your voices to our petition... and the World Bank is beginning to act! At a UN meeting in the summer, the World Bank announced that it has increased its investment in off-grid renewable energy. The amount it’s investing is still far too small – the World Bank spends billions on energy investments that are unlikely to reach the poorest people – so we want to see much greater investment in off-grid renewables.
The World Bank will be meeting from 8 to 14 October and this is a key opportunity for us to continue to put pressure on it. So, let’s keep going: it’s working!
But why should you join in this October?
Why renewable energy? We know from our partners and the communities that we work with that having access to electricity transforms people’s lives. In Tanzania we saw child school completion rates go from under 50% to almost 100% after solar power was introduced. How amazing is that?
Why are we asking the World Bank? It is a huge organisation with a lot of influence and money and it has the ability to be a game-changer in bringing electricity to people in poverty.
Why do we need your support? We know from history that big changes and campaign wins like fair trade have only happened when people from across society come together and make their voice heard.
It’s time to make our voices heard!
