Tearfund: How did your supermarket do?

Hi, Peter

How did your supermarket do?

Last year, four out of five of us said we’d consider switching our supermarket if it wasn’t doing enough to reduce food waste.

But there was one big problem: it’s almost impossible to compare supermarkets because they all measure food waste differently.

Find out who is Top of the Shops on tackling food waste

No-one likes wasting food – and what’s more, food waste fuels climate change, so it has a big impact on people in poverty worldwide.

So, more than 9,500 of us asked ten UK supermarkets to make two big Renew Our Food promises: commit to halving food waste by 2030, in line with the target set by the UN, and publish a plan to show customers how they will get there.

The results are in!Each supermarket has been rated green, amber or red, based on its response to the Renew Our Food campaign.

As well as helping us compare supermarkets against the same benchmark, each of these commitments could have a huge impact. Tesco’s pledge alone could save carbon emissions equivalent to taking almost 50,000 cars off UK roads by 2030 – and more if Tesco gets its suppliers to cut food waste too.

Does your supermarket get the green light or are they in the red? Click here to find out.

We hope you’ll continue to journey with us as we take action on waste, climate change and poverty. We won’t stop until poverty stops.

Every blessing,

Kit Powney, Tearfund Action
