Christmas is approaching, a time when we reflect and celebrate Jesus, God incarnate, our Emmanuel. And a New Year is approaching, full of new opportunities, experiences and challenges. But before we rush into 2018, we want to take some time to thank you - and reflect on what we have achieved together this year towards ending poverty.
Remember that we launched the Renew Our World campaign back in March? Here's what's happened since then:
Calling for clean energy
We kicked off the new campaign by asking the UK Government to rebalance their funding - moving away from fossil fuels so that people living in poverty get clean, efficient and affordable energy. Last month, while world leaders met in Bonn to consider progress towards tackling climate change globally, we headed to Westminster with your actions to show the Government that over 5,000 of you want to see them make a difference for people living in poverty.
Tackling food waste
We've also been taking action to tackle food waste. Thanks so much to all of you who called on your supermarket to Renew Our Food - 9,500 actions have been taken so far! This is fantastic in showing retailers how much their customers care about waste and its impact on the poorest.
We've now written to supermarkets, asking them to listen to you and give people in poverty an extra special Christmas gift by committing to halve their food waste. Will your store agree? We hope so! We'll announce which supermarkets are leading the way on waste in March 2018, so keep an eye out for our update then!
Thank you for taking time to be part of Tearfund Action this year and we hope you continue to join with us in prayer and action in 2018.
Have a wonderful Christmas,
Kit Powney, Tearfund Action
